COMMUNITY FORESTRY

Tree City USA

Evanston is a participant in Tree City USA. Tree City USA is a program through the Arbor Day Foundation and in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, Urban, and Community Forestry, and the National Association of State Foresters.

What is Tree City USA? The Arbor Day Foundation website (www.arborday.org) explains the program like this:
"The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America. Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. Participating communities have demonstrated a commitment to caring for and managing their public trees. Together the more than 3,400 Tree City USA communities serve as home to more than 135 million Americans."

Evanston is proud that we have been part of the Tree City USA program for 18 years, and we look forward to many more years of community forestry growth!

How Can You Be Involved?

There are three (3) ways you can be involved with the Community Forestry program in Evanston.

1) Purchase a tree through the Community Forestry Planting Program. Plant and adequately maintain the tree on your property.

2) Participate in the annual Arbor Day Celebration every April. Each year we choose a different location within the City to plant trees.

3) Volunteer with the Evanston Tree Board.

If you are interested in participating in any of these ways please contact us at 307-789-2519, and we will help you become involved!
